Grillicious Flavor-Infused Grill and Pan Wipes: A Taste of Disappointment
Greetings from the smoky trenches of barbecue-land! Today, we’re probing the proverbial coals of the Grillicious Flavor-Infused Grill and Pan Wipes. I donned my apron with a heart full of hope, tantalized by the thought of a grilling hack that could revolutionize my culinary life. Alas, my friends, let’s just say the road to disappointment is often paved with good intentions (and questionable wipes).
With six flavors to choose from, including Mesquite, Habanero, Rosemary, Onion, Garlic, and Hickory. We went with Hickory, well, because…Hickory. The thought of getting a touch of BBQ flavor from cooking in a pan sounded like a dream.
The product is touted as eco-friendly, which is commendable in this era of environmental conscientiousness. Kudos to the Grillicious team for using recyclable materials and 100% all-natural ingredients, although I fear they might have put all their eco-eggs in one basket and forgot to hatch the rest of their product development plans.
As I ripped open the package, I was immediately hit with a liquid hickory smoke-scented mallet and by scented, I mean it would’ve made a perfume counter salesperson weak in the knees. I took this as being indicative of flavor-infused goodness, but still it had me pondering if I’d accidentally broken into a bottle of overly ambitious eau de grill.
The wipes themselves are generously sized, about 3”x 3” and are very saturated with the ingredients being used to create the non-stick surface and flavor. I can’t say what they’re made from but are reminiscent of a Scotch-Brite scouring pad only thinner, softer, and minus the abrasiveness.
I opted for the pedestrian charm of a regular non-stick pan to conduct this review. My collection of cast iron wonders, grills, and smokers, already seasoned to perfection, stood proudly on the sidelines. I couldn’t bear the thought of any ambitious flavors sneaking in, I was determined to keep things clean and let the wipes do the talking.
I gave it a generous wipe down and let it preheat on medium-high heat. After letting it simmer in anticipation for a spell, I treated it to another round of gleaming wipe-down, ensuring it was primed and ready for its culinary debut.
An unseasoned ribeye seemed the way to go here for a few reasons. It likes the heat and cooks quick, who doesn’t want a steak, and hickory plus beef…hello! As I set it in the pan and like a chorus of culinary cheerleaders, the sizzle squad sprang into action, cheering on my taste buds who were eagerly warming up for their grand slam of deliciousness!
Once the thermometer hit 125 degrees, I swiftly plucked the steak from the searing pan, granting it a mini sabbatical to reflect on its journey towards succulent perfection. With knife poised and taste buds on high alert, I could hardly contain my impatience “Prepare to meet your match, oh scrumptious temptress!”
As I took my first bite, it hit me, the hickory flavor was as elusive as a unicorn. My taste buds found no trace of it. It was like I slapped a wet napkin on the pan and expected magic to happen. Disappointing? Absolutely.
I beckoned my better half, summoning her impeccable palate to put a morsel to the test. Alas, even her culinary finesse couldn’t detect a smidgen of hickory essence as if it had played an elaborate prank on us.
In a spur-of-the-moment decision, I used the wipe directly on the meat and returned it to the pan for a burst of heat. Then and only then could I taste the hickory. I couldn’t place what it reminded me of at first but then my wife unapologetically nailed it: “This, my dear, tastes like hickory-smoked bacon.”
In the final reckoning, I bestow upon the Grillicious wipes a resounding score of 2 out of 5. It’s a case of unfulfilled promises and missed opportunities, like biting into a burger only to find a limp pickle hiding beneath the bun. Their usability and environmentally friendly approach manage to salvage some points that prevent a nosedive into the abyss of 1-star disappointment.
While the concept is both innovative and intriguing, the execution feels a tad undercooked. The promise of a flavor-infused wipe that truly delivers is tantalizing. However, it seems we must wait a bit longer for Grillicious to fully realize this potential. After all, Rome wasn’t grilled in a day!
So, my fellow BBQ aficionados, for now, let’s stick to our trusty marinades and rubs until a true grilling revolution arrives. Stay hungry, my friends!
